Going to college may intimidate you as much as it excites you. It is a big transition in life and will broaden both your education and life skills. It can be really difficult to balance living without parents and also staying disciplined about your education, yet college is this very challenge.

Don’t underestimate the importance of having fun in college. That doesn’t mean ignoring school work for a party, however. You should visit the museum or go to see a show with some friends.

Never rely on another person’s notes to achieve success. You can never be sure if the person whose notes you borrow is actually a good student or a good note taker. They may take short cuts or not write down all the important information.

Try to stick with your new school for at least a full school year before deciding you do not like it. Initially many students will feel awkward or homesick because of how different it is from what their life used to be. Think about your options if you are still not satisfied after a year.

Make use of your professors’ office hours. When you are struggling, they can help. Take advantage of this time to pick your professor’s brain and soak up some much-needed one-on-one advice.

Are you interested in playing sports in college? Contact the coach at the college you are interested in attending. Most college coaches are unaware of future star athletes, so let them know you would like to play for their college’s team. This may even result in an unexpected athletic scholarship.

During the first semester, take a minimum of one general ed class so that you can put it behind you. If you need a class to graduate and you don’t want to take, take it earlier so that you can get into classes you enjoy later on. You don’t want to have to take classes with the kids when you’re a senior!

Never submit the first draft of a paper. Allow yourself time to make revisions. Don’t just reread it, but instead, write it out a second time. Give this second draft a good proofreading and revision. When you do this, your paper will contain all necessary information.

If coffee is your passion, try not to purchase it each and every day. This is way too expensive. Brew your coffee instead of buying it at a coffee shop. While it’s not as easy as getting it from a coffee place while you’re out, you can save quite a bit of cash this way. A good coffee maker can be found quite cheaply if you take the time to shop around.

Remember that there are required courses that won’t really be connected with your choice of major. Don’t disregard these classes since the grades you get in them affect your GPA.

Save money by eating at the cafeteria. Restaurant food can make you feel bad and can drain your wallet. Therefore, having student meal plans is crucial, although the food may not be all that great. Use the cash that you could have spent on eating out to get yourself groceries that are healthy and filling at the grocery store.

The earlier you register for your college classes, the better. If you wait, you might not get into the classes you want. If you are interested in a class, make sure to register for it early in the process.
